The Hawaiian Heroes project was done for my humanities class. For this project, we had to pick an influential figure from Hawaiian history, do research on them, and put that research into many different outlets to compete in a battle royale of sorts to figure out which 'hero' had the biggest impact on Hawaiian history.
21st Century SkillWhile this project may have focused on the history on one culture, it was one different from what we would normally learn about. Over the course of school thus far, the education in history I have received has mostly surrounded American history, and while Hawaii may be a part of the United States now, it hasn't always been that way. The islands have a unique history, with many unspoken figures. This project allowed me to learn about other histories and cultures, as well as the people who made history.

For this project I chose Sanford B. Dole as my 'hero', despite the fact that he was more of a villain then anything else in history. I was curious to learn more about the motives of the opposing side. History is always told from the perspective of those who win, yes, but you don't usually learn about how what somebody did was wrong. That peaked my interest in choosing Dole as the subject of my project. That and the fact that he did have a very large impact on Hawaiian history.
I honestly don't think I would do this project very differently if given the opportunity to do it again. With all the rounds, I put the work that got me good grades, and won my fair share of rounds. The project lasted a whole quarter, so compared to many other projects, I put a lot of work into this one. |
